A hand-painted surfboard created for the launch of ShapeShifter, a book by Anglesea shaper Sergio Gomez about the connection between surfboards, waves and the craft behind them. Each invited artist received a blank board shaped by Gomez to use as a canvas. Titled SURSH UP, the board builds on a base of fine blue and white speckle, then layers cut planes, soft gradients and fragmented URSH letterforms in deep cobalt and pale blue. The two sides are treated as separate compositions, so the board reads differently from every angle. Once painted, the board was glassed by Gomez Surfboards to seal the work into the finish. It was then shown alongside works by other invited artists at the launch exhibition. The project brings the URSHTRAY language off the wall and onto an object made to be ridden.
