Laneway Red is a self-initiated mural painted across a garage wall in a residential laneway. It treats the wall as a large collage. Torn and overlapping planes of neon red, black, soft cream and grey stack across the surface like layers of old posters, paint and patched render.
The composition plays off contrasts. Flat, hard-edged blocks of colour sit next to dry-brush marks, speckled spray fields and textures with a printed feel. Fluorescent red keeps the eye moving across the length of the wall, and the muted greys and creams calm it back down.
Painted without a commission, the wall became a space to test new combinations of colour, mark-making and layering, free of a brief. Up close, the detail rewards a slower look. From the end of the laneway, it reads as one bold, graphic piece.
