Four Pillars commissioned the label artwork for Melbourne Laneway Gin, part of the distillery’s City Series. The gin is a tribute to Melbourne, made with coffee beans from Proud Mary Coffee Roasters. It brings together three things closely tied to the city: coffee, street art and good gin.
Rather than showing one particular laneway, the artwork captures the feeling of walking through Melbourne. Brick walls, painted concrete, layers of posters and the marks people leave behind over time are pulled into one dense, layered composition. Deep blues, warm oranges and hot reds sit against grainy spray textures and photographic brick surfaces. Bold geometric cut shapes run through it all.
Moving from wall to bottle was the main challenge. A mural is seen from a distance first, with details showing up up close. A label works the other way round, so every element had to read at a small scale and still feel layered and full of character. The result brings the energy of Melbourne’s laneways to a bottle that fits in your hand.
The project shows how a street art language can work across product packaging and brand collaborations.
