REWIND was a large-scale indoor mural painted for KEVN (Kelderman en Van Noort), an exhibition space with a strong focus on graffiti, graphic design and illustration. The exhibition was designed to grow over ten weeks, with artists adding work along the way, and to open officially only at the end.
The brief was an open playground. The response was a mural with wooden panels built into it. Each panel was mounted on the wall and painted as part of one continuous composition. Taken off the wall, the panels become standalone works, and the mural still holds together as a piece in its own right.
The palette is kept to black, white, red and a deep ultramarine blue. Sweeping spray strokes, hard-edged cut shapes, overspray and speckle fields overlap across the wall and the panels. Rather than following a fixed design, the composition was worked out on site in direct response to the wall and the room.
The project shows how a mural can work with a gallery programme. It gives a single wall a site-specific piece and a set of collectable works.
